                                       School Profile

Ballan Common School Number 54 was founded in 1855 and situated on the Anglican Church grounds. In 1874, the Common School became Ballan State School and the accommodation was transferred to the current site in Duncan Street. Ballan Primary School has been, and continues to be, an important part of the semi-rural community. It is situated 40 kilometers east of Ballarat and eighty kilometers from Melbourne.

The original building that was refurbished and extended in 1986, has retained its historic character and, along with well-maintained grounds, exudes a welcoming atmosphere. The physical environment of the school is well developed and attractive, with a permanent structure comprising seven classrooms, an administrative area and staff room. Other classrooms and an integration room are housed in re-locatable buildings. Our shared community stadium is a highly valued resource. The construction in 2000, of the permanent Library, Art/Craft and Canteen facility is also in keeping with the architectural design of the existing buildings. In 1998 - 1999 the school oval was redeveloped. An adventure playground, designed by and catering for grade 5/6 students has been constructed and a "forest", again, designed by Grade 5/6 students, has been planted.

The school has recently completed the construction of its new administration area and two classrooms through the State Government School Building program.

Our school provides a comprehensive curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, Physical Education, Integrated Curriculum (Health, Technology and Studies of Society and the Environment) and is developing a LOTE (Italian) program.

Specialist teachers currently provide Visual Arts, Physical Education, Reading Recovery and Integration programs. To actively support these curriculum areas the following enrichment programs are provided: Junior School Council, Life Education, Swimming (Grade 3/4), camping and excursions, perceptual motor program, Tournament of Minds (Gifted & Talented children), religious education, district and zone sport, healthy relationships and parent education programs.

The Arts Key Learning Area is an important area in our school, with prominent displays throughout the school. Curriculum areas are resourced through a Program Budgeting approach, which follows an annual, cyclical review of all areas.

The staff at Ballan Primary School recognise the advantages of planning and working in teams to best provide for the needs of our students. Professional Development has been undertaken in aspects of teamwork and thinking skills, as well as the most important areas of literacy and numeracy and all other key learning areas. Staff demonstrate a commitment to corporate responsibility for all students and show strong collegiate support.

At Ballan Primary School we acknowledge the benefits to students when parents and teachers work together. Therefore our school has an "open door" policy that encourages parent and community participation in many aspects of school life. Parent groups such as School Council, Parents and Friends Group and the Canteen Committee give much valued service to the whole school community. Other areas in which parents' presence is noted and appreciated is in curriculum programs (including English, Mathematics, P.E., Sport and the Arts), in camps and excursions, on working bees, on parent information and curriculum evenings and, of course, in both formal and informal parent/teacher interviews. The wider community supports the school in fundraising and participation in special events such as "Grandparents' Day".

Ballan Primary School continues to put children first.
